How did you land your first client as a freelancer?

  • I am working as a freelancer for 6 years now, and only had a period of 3 months, but not altogether, in which I didn't have any clients. What absolutely made a difference for me, especially at the beginning when I had no experience, was the absolute trust that I will find a client fast. I knew I wanted something full-time (back then at least), and in 1month I found my first client, full-time for a few months until the project was finished. After that it was a matter of learning to send quality winning proposals, which I did, and the main lesson when applying is: make it all about the client, how you can help him, what can you do for him, and less about you and your past experience.
  • Hi Gurdain, my first client as a freelancer was through a friend who was also a creative. I would also say that 90% (or higher) of the work I gained as a freelancer filmmaker was through existing contacts. Not necessarily direct contacts but through their contacts, both professional and non. It really is all about getting both your name and your skills out there and sooner or later the world will start to feed back to you...!
  • Through a former colleague. Relationships are the key. I'd recommend always letting the people you work with what your passions/interests are, and try to keep in touch.
  • I used to work as a Designer/Illustrator for a greetings card/gift company and I used to make myself desktop wallpapers to keep myself sane (sick of drawing teddy bears).
I'd put these out there for people to download for free and that's how I got my first client who was a big app developer in the USA.
