How to go back from Freelance/entrepreneur to a permanent role?

After over 5 years running a small creative business, as a challenging year with covid, I realised I would be more useful and able to make a bigger impact in a bigger business. What would be the best way to do this? As my CV looks strange.

I believe that having lived as a business owner, I appreciate and understand the challenges of the employee as much as the clients. I feel it should be a strength, but I am not sure if it is also a potential put off for the employer.

What would be your advice?

  • I once worked on a branding exercise for an independent wealth manager who had been bought out by a financial institution.

Their main concern was being subsumed into the larger organisation and losing their identity.

They had a niche offering and we looked at ways of protecting their core values.

Safe harbours can be very appealing in challenging times.

Perhaps you could consider lateral as well as vertical thinking.

    Mergers rather than takeovers.
  • @Anna Negrini Thanks! this is useful and it is exacly what is happening. Thing is I have worked in businesses as well and that is where I see I can add more value, as being a business owner involves a lot of admin that I am not good at and not intrerested. It has been a great experience and deffenitly a strength as I see businesses from a different lents now.

    Thanks!!

  • Firstly I think you need to question yourself if it's really what you want: sometimes it's difficult to go back to 9-5 job or a role where you have a boss (unless the boss it's you :)).
My experience is that your portfolio is usually the main thing they look at, unless coming from a similar company is required.
Generally speaking, companies sometimes are afraid to hire a freelance for the above reasons, so you can try and give some motives for your choice in the cover letter (work in a team, bigger and complex projects, progress in your skills, etc.). And of course skills acquired working as a business owner can be strengths too.
