I need some advice about getting through unemployment

Hi!

I was made redundant on the 28th August & have applied for over 900 jobs in the past month, had 9 interviews but no job offers.

I also work as a freelance digital strategist.

Unfortunately because of the cost of living crisis I only had enough savings to last me until the end of October and I just need some advice on my next steps.

I’m not sure where to go from here & not knowing if I will be able to pay my bills or buy food is truly terrifying.

Any advice would be amazing :)

Hang on, you'll get there soon.

First, you may want to get your CV refreshed and some perspectives, have you tried to reach out to recruitment agencies or CV builder experts to get some thoughts? With the current market, there is no time to be humble, and I'd recommend Highlighting your biggest achievements in your CV, beyond listing your tasks is very important. Keep your CV easy to read and very simple, with no fluffy design. Attach your portfolio, when it is relevant to the targeted roles.

Second to this - Continue sending open applications, submit your CV to recruitment agencies, build portfolios to showcase in your applications, leverage your freelancing opportunities for long-term and contractual positions, and network with your clients, letting them know you are open to permanent positions.
Ask your friends, networks, and contacts about current projects their company might need, and if you can contribute to their success.
Last but not least, you may also take training (currently free) while you are in your search to keep your employability level high. Applying for the Universal Credits system may help you access this content for free. Seek support from your family during this short time, as they may understand your temporary situation.
Investing in yourself during this time, combined with your freelancing work, is key to success. Remember also to reward yourself weekly with a treat; a job search is already a job, so do not push yourself to burn out."
  • Hey Giu,

I'm in a very similar position to you at the moment - constantly looking for work and at times struggling to makes end meet financially speaking. For the latter, one thing which has really helped me is applying for Universal Credit which can considerably help with costs each month (i.e. rent, food etc.).

Aside from this, I also find meeting people face-to-face, networking, and introducing yourself at company's offices are an effective way of getting your name out there and letting those know you're keen on joining their team.

Can certainly be a tiring trade but definitely worthwhile to stand out from others and show your enthusiasm! If you want any other advice, feel free to drop me a message.

    Best of luck!
  • One thing I did in your position 25 years ago was to organise my cv to one page, and did a batch of photocopys and then walked round industrial estates from company to company knocking on doors asking if they had a marketing role, leaving a CV at each one.

A few days later one called back, I got an interview and a job.
The company liked the fact I’d taken the initiative and they created a role, for which there was no other competition.

It was cheap to do, I got to see allot of people and it gave me a purpose whilst I had not got any work. I know these are different times and it may not work for you, but alternativly as a freelance strategist you may be able to pick up a project or two.
