I NEED YOUR HELP! I am struggling to find good sources for my thesis. Do you have any articles/essays/books on architecture to recommend?

I am currently reading Architecture as Methaphor by Kojin Karatani.

I am looking for texts that approach architecture from a philosophical and theoretical point of view. Best if they are focused on forms, shapes, lines, geometry, movement of architectural forms.

Your help will be much appreciated xx

  • Came across this today in the Paris Review.

    https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2022/02/08/structure-is-a-design-in-light-the-notebooks-of-louis-i-kahn/

    Might be of some use.

    Good luck.
  • My thesis focuses on how architecture within science fiction was reflective of the real world and how it’s concerns were generated. One of the key texts I used was archeologies of the future

I can send a link to my thesis if you decide to explore the area
  • @Zofia Kierkus Hi, thank you so much for your suggestions!

You are absolutely right about Invisible Cities, however I have already made a publication based on that book (which you can see in my profle if you are interested) and that is the only reason why I am not using it for this project as well. Otherwise, an amazing book!

I'll definetely have a look at The Poetics of Space, which seems aligned with my project. I'll get in contact if I need more help and you can do so as well :)
  • @Erica Ciuffreda suggested it as it might have good arguments “Kojin Karatani” either for or against views as The Modulor and Modulor by Le Corbusier recall is based on the theory of human body proportions that was incorpated into he’s architecture.

There was an episode of Grand Designs spoke about what you are posting about. I’ll geek out on a few episodes.
  • @Ryan Hughes Hi Ryan, thanks for your answer!
I borrowed Towards a new architecture and I hope to find some interesting material.
I still haven't thought about a title for my thesis. I am working on a publication that brings together architectural photographs I have taken, a typeface I have created and written texts on architecture. That's why I am collecting written material on the subject. Hope this clarifies a bit the topic :)
  • Hi Erica,

    This sounds really interesting.

Off to bat I’m thinking of architects/critics like Daniel Libeskind (his book about Masterplanning the World Trade Centre is really insightful), Le Corbusier (Towards a new Architecture) or maybe Jane Jacob’s Life and Death of American Cities.

Are you able to share the title of your thesis and maybe I can find/think of some more.

    Best regards,
    Ryan.
