  • Hi Sophie! As Younes said, definitely having a path is better but if you are starting out maybe you still don't have one so I'll recommend be open to try different areas. When I started learning I watched youtube tutorials from these channels, and still use them:
    eyedesyn
    Mt. Mograph
    Move Shapes
    School of Motion - I took a course with them and it was extremely helpful, they also have loads of tutorials on YouTube
    Black Mixture
    Motion Design School
    MoGraph Mentor

    Hope this become helpful to you! : )
  • First, define what path you are willing to take after that basic motion graphics knowledge, After Effects can be so broad from VFX to 3D renders and even cartoons.

    I personally started with the good old VideoCopilot like 8 years ago and it was all what I needed to get familiar with the software without compromising my creativity.

    This being said, Youtube is your best friend but use it mindfully, don't let yourself charmed by the outcomes of each individual effect to find yourself learning the specific each time instead of the fundamentals. You guessed it, it is a matter of extracting the big picture from each tutorial.

    Some keywords and baby steps to avoid confusion on the huge amount of content out there on YT:
    - Start with the interface (literally every corner of it), it may feel intimidating at first;
    - Learn the basic principle of animation (it will make you more mindful while animating);
    - Focus on the timeline and most importantly how the keyframes & interpolation work (including the graphs);
    - Then you can start playing around with the effects (but never before the basics);
    - Understand at an early stage the importance of PreCompositions, Null objects, and Parenting (it is a workflow game-changer)
    - Taking things further with Scripts and Plugins (only if needed, if a tutorial is depending on them skip it for now).

    I won't be able to recommend any artist in specific as each one is good at his own style, so to avoid making you biased, just trust the algorithm while searching for what I mentioned above, anything that pops up in the first 3 or 5 is something worth watching.

    I hope this one is helpful, I won't hesitate to dig into details if needed. Good luck!
  • Hello there, it depends what kind of stuff you are wanting to create. In general VideoCopilot is great for tutorials and free stuff, and I love this guy called Ben Marriot on Youtube. I am also an After Effects tutor although can't offer much for free I'm afraid! Good luck!
  • From experience, it all depends what you want to do with it.
    I personally tend to use it more for animation so after I got familiar with the basics and the UI I concentrated on that.
    Skillshare were doing a two month free trial + another month when you go to cancel the trial.
    Linkedin Learning also offer a free month and both are woth checking out as they have plenty of Ae tut's.
