If your usual style is always to give notice in a job before finding another, would you stay true to your style in this current climate?

  • I would actually normally give notice after I find another job. However, I do give at least a month's notice depending on how long I've been there, even if they don't require that long.
  • Hello Natalie – it seems we have our names and profession in common! I have usually lined up my next job before giving notice to my current one, except where I have some savings that I could take a month or two off. This helped me twice to work on my own business. However – if you are securing a new job and then giving notice, you also have the flexibility to arrange your start date weeks ahead and give yourself a week or some days break in between – I've found that a much-needed decompression before starting a new job is magical – the excitement for what awaits builds!
  • In the past I've been open with my employers and they've actually been super helpful sharing the contacts and advice on finding the next role.
  • No way. I'd always find the next job before I leave my current one, even more so now. Have you considered freelance? It's a great way to explore the industry and experience lots of different styles of working / agency set up without getting trapped.
  • I would say decide it by karma. Generally don't do things with your employer that you wouldn't find fair as an employee. If they treated you fair / nice at least give a voice that you are looking around for certain reasons. They maybe give you a better place in house. If they treated you bad than well... put yourself first.
  • Yes I do, it’s been reassuring to check in with other peoples thoughts. Applying the slogan to broader decisions is a great help. Really appreciate your response.
  • I suspect you probably know the answer to that. You only need to pay attention to how many applicants there are for upcoming jobs in LinkedIn to get the picture...
