Obvious graphic design question from a novice: if you’re a book cover designer building up your portfolio, is it ok to use existing books?

  • For sure! Self-initiated projects show that you're proactive and want to show what you're capable of. You should definately populate your portfolio with work you like doing, chances are you will attract similar kind of jobs from potential clients.

  • Yes, and encouraged. Redesigning books you like is bound to be more enjoyable than client-based work and result in a better design that will appeal more to art directors and freelance clients more than cheap work you did for an overbearing client. Even if you’re not building a portfolio, I advocate for self-initiating projects to demonstrate the extent of your design skill and to, you know, have some fun.
