QUESTION: do I really need a website to show off my work? Or shall i just redirect my url to my Instagram profile?

  • This is a great question, @Scott Robinson. I wrote about it here: https://yourcreativeletter.substack.com/p/do-you-need-a-website-in-todays-digital

Now, I think you can work with both. Keep in mind that Instagram alone is great but if there is a bug there (accounts, facebook etc) you need to secure a space for people to have access to your work. And in today's era, there are many spaces and platforms you can choose to showcase your work.

If you do animation, GIFs etc, I recommend looking at Giphy as a portfolio reference.

There is kind of a roadmap or formula: look at ease, tech, audience and consistency.

    Bets of luck!
  • I always prefer viewing a dedicated portfolio over viewing an instagram, I think instagram just doesn't allow enough space for the work to breathe. I tend to use my instagram as a news & updates kind of platform that always directs to the portfolio where people can view the bigger picture.

In terms of portfolio networks like Behance or Dribbble, again I wouldn't rely on these are your sole portfolio - they're too unmemorable for an AD or potential client. A portfolio (even a fairly simple one) allows your work to really shine in your environment.

  • As a designer with your background. I would strongly recommend having a website. It is a more substantial way of communicating your work and contacting you. Instagram is not a professional platform-it’s a social app. Plus it is likely to crash and you could lose opportunities.
If you have a CC subscription then you can crate one for free. However, it’s better to have basic plan on either Squarespace or other builder sites. Hope that helps :)
  • Hi Scott,
You could try a free Behance folio - you don't need a paid Adobe subscription to use this platform. It's easy to use and you can show your projects in more detail, plus you get to be part of a creative community.

(I personally don't see the urgency of another web presence - it's time consuming promoting and updating so many different sites, but having said that I also have a Wix website which is easy to set up with intuitive tools and I've never had any issues with it - unlike when I had a Wordpress site which needed constant updating and monitoring. The free version has slightly less SEO stuff and has their banner at top and their name in your url - I haven't bothered with the subscription version yet.)
  • I would strongly recommend having a website - it shows much more than posts can, especially if you are trying to show the behind the scenes of a project as well as final pieces :-)
  • Hi Scott, depending on what You need to put out there, consider also a visual portfolio instead of a website. Websites need to be constantly updated and therefore require time and attention - unless You have loads of those to spare!
  • I think a website will always bring a slightly higher degree of legitimacy to you as a designer, but I think more than that you should see it as a space for your expression and an extension of your artistry. I’ve heard plenty of people killing it off of Instagram alone, but it really depends on your intended clientele.
