  • @Mandie Johnson thank you Mandie! Really interesting suggestions, I will have to play around with the layout a bit more. Thanks again!
  • Hi Gabriella,

You have some great work and I think it might be worth trying out a different template for your web site.

In order to make your character illustrations really shine perhaps they would benefit from appearing on single pages, or variations of one character on a single page (perhaps try a template that's not so boxy).

Also, as others have pointed out some more notes on the context of your work, you clearly have many talents and skills (illustration, design, animation etc), so make sure you communicate this clearly.

As it stands, each category (page) has lots of work for the eye to take in, so maybe a different template might allow more versatility... less images on each page and with some descriptions on the work too.

Don't be afraid to show individual illustrations alone on a single page, your work is strong enough (layout can really alter how you present your work and a really good layout will add more dynamism to your work).

Also, perhaps try photographing your books on different coloured backgrounds.

    Lots of luck,

    Mandie

  • Hi Gariella!

Great website, I love your style!
As feedback, and as some have mentioned before, would be great to see description, more details on your work and your point of view as artist (what inspires you, why you are more drawn to specific colours or techniques, etc) together with your visual work, as that´s what really sets you apart from other illustrators. Then, if you have some snaps/shots of your mentions in press and exhibitions, would be great too, to keep that section more dynamic and not so textual- Would love to see your illustrations everywhere in the site! I hope this helps too, good luck and keep it up!!

    Greetings from Ecuador, South America.
  • @jan lewis that’s great! Definitely worth considering, especially from a fresh perspective. Thank you so much for your feedback!
  • @Gabriella Wilde Yes, designed and illustrated works well.

I think it's just the categories I'm confused by. Because there's no text, I'm not seeing a clear distinction between Narrative and Editorial or why those items are in each category. And then in Rhymes, not every image is a rhyme but there's no description or explanation why the non-word images are there too.

I think I was expecting more when I click on an image - for there to be a fuller description, a title or more information.

It's fine that it's uni work but as someone else mentioned, if there's a hint at describing the brief, that would give the viewer some context.

However, mine is just one opinion so do more testing. It might just be me!
  • @jan lewis thank you Jan, that’s really encouraging!

Most of my work is self-directed/university projects, would you recommend stating this, or just provide some additional context for the brief?

Currently everything on my site is wholly illustrated and designed by myself (including use of typography). Would you suggest a statement such as “designed and illustrated by Gabriella Wilde” would be sufficient to demonstrate this?

    Thanks again!
  • Hi Gabriella, I really like it and it's a good quanitity of work.
Because you have different sections and so many projects, I think you need to say more.
Are all the projects real jobs and if so, can you be more specific?
For example, the Romeo & Juliet project looks interesting - is it a real book. Is it available? Is the whole page design yours including the typography? Who did you work with?
And the same of the other projects.
However, if you don't want to do that, I'd lose the different categories/search functions and it'd still be a nice portfolio.
  • i think touching on what eirini mentioned, add what the brief is for the idividual projects, the contextualisation of what the characters are about. otherwise the illustrations all look like thy are from the same world
  • @Eirini Scott thank you Eirini, that’s a great idea! I will definitely look to incorporate this going forward.
  • Hi Gabriella, love your website. It looks current and cool. You may want to add your inspiration and your technique behind some of your illustrations to add a bit more depth. Just a suggestion:) Be safe, be creative !
  • theink perhaps mock them up in a childrens book, perhaps some one holding it, make it feel tangible.

for character design i show development of how my character got to where it is. so i dont just post the finish product
