What’s the best way to start my career in the creative industry and be desirable to employers ?

I’m a recent fashion graduate with a first class degree trying to find my feet and prove my creative abilities. I’m currently looking for a creative full time job, but I have soooo many skills to offer ! How do I channel my passions down to one thing and prove that I am capable and a great asset to employers???

  • Hello Kyra-Jade,

One of the best ways to get noticed is to start making your own work alongside sending your applications. If you can set yourself a project and show it online, in your portfolio and in interviews and get great photos of it that will help you keep building a portfolio of work until you land your dream job.

Definitely target your CV and cover letter, it takes a bit of time but people will understand at a glance how you could be a good addition to their team.

Show your portfolio and CV, there is always room to improve it until you land a job so feedback is really useful.

  • Hi Kyra,

I would recommend you to separate long term and short term goals. In the short term as a junior creative attitude and personality will always be more important than skills. So I would recommend to have an emphasize on being very enthusiastic about working for the companies you apply for and yes it does include tayloring your CV / portfolio for them.

In a longer term I would recommend to have a deep look into yourself what would be your ultimate goal, like what kind of work you really really want to do. After defining it push on personal projects in that space and sooner or later things will work out in that direction if you are consistent. And of course share your work everywhere, every time!
  • If you hit the jackpot, you'll find something multidisciplinary which you are perfect for! Sometimes recruiters are looking for a unique skillset, and you could be the right fit. So, keep on the lookout.

In the meantime, I recommend keeping those varied CVs. You could also create an online portfolio with filters for the different areas you can work within. You could create a page for each different type of skill.

Arts Council often posts varied creative roles: https://www.artsjobs.org.uk/search/

    Good luck! :-) x
  • @Vikki Ross thank you! I have multiple CVs but I will get started on producing a few different portfolios! Thanks for the advice 😊
  • Tailor your skills depending on who you're contacting ie have multiple CVs/portfolios to suit your audience - hope that helps a tiny bit!
