Working in the UK after Brexit! Advice needed!
Hello, I am in need of advice. I hold an Italian citizenship, was born and lived most of my life there. Until last year, because of my language skills and previous collaborations, the UK was the country I was mostly focusing on in sending applications and trying to find a job. Brexit made that incredibly hard, since most companies are not willing to sponsor a work VISA now. Would you recommend me to simply focus on other European countries? I am really struggling with it, since it was definitely the country where I had more chances…

- @Anna Negrini thank you so much for your insights! I'm gonna take all of this into consideration.
- Unless you're a unique talent that can be hired for a unique style, yes, it can be hard now, especially because Brexit is still "fresh" and the Covid situation made evrything harder, so companies are less willing to take a risk. You can also go for the "soft" route, working for a global agency anywhere in Italy or Europe and then ask to be relocated in UK. If the language is your concern, in most workplaces (mainly tech or startup, where the staff is international) in Amsterdam, Berlin, Tallin etc. English is the main language. I think is mainly think about where you want to live, as the cultural aspect is important too.
- Hi Sara,If you definitely want to work in the UK you could try as a freelancer making a company in the UK and paying a working VISA for yourself. You would need to meet with certain requirements but I do believe it's still fairly easy.
- @Evelyn Ong thank you so much for your advice, this helped a lot! Gonna definitely consider that!
- Hi Sara, I completely feel what you are going through. It takes a mental toll sometimes! I would say definitely persevere through it if you feel this is the country you want to be in. It is disheartening when people give you a flat “No” because of the visa situation. It helps if you know what path you want to take e.g. social media content creation for events. It makes it slightly more difficult if you have a grey area with your aspirations for your ‘dream job’ (this is just from my experience, having learned this the difficult way!).Good luck!
- @Youmna Hazzaa thank you! It’s a bit discouraging when the applications are immediately discarded because of the VISA question in the process, without people even looking at them. But thank you for your kind words, I will keep looking.
- Hey there Sara, as an Egyptian who's had to deal with visa pre-Brexit too. I understand the frustration and concern. My advice would be to definitely keep looking. Things aren't as easy now because of covid and all the redundancies made already. But there are companies out there, just not as easy to find. Don't give up :)
