Guest-curated by the Cultural and Historical Studies team at London College of Fashion, Professor Shahidha Bari will chair a discussion with researchers at UAL and with colleagues at the V&A, to reflect on work that attempts to de-centre Western, white and Eurocentric ideas of fashion. The aim of the session is to think about fashion as a more global network of production and consumption. Participants will present their research and reflect on the challenges and opportunities for fashion studies going forward.

Speaker Biographies:
  • Charlie Athill is Lecturer in Cultural and Historical Studies at LCF. He is the co-convenor of the Masculinities Research Hub at LCF and one of the co-organisers of the Globalising Men’s Style conference.
  • Shahidha Bari is an academic, critic and broadcaster. She is Professor of Fashion Cultures and Histories at LCF, the writer of Dressed: The Secret Life of Clothes and presenter for BBC Radio 3 and 4.
  • Lipi Begum is Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Fashion Business and Innovation at LCF. Her work focuses on contemporary fashion business cultures and social enterprise. She has worked as a sustainability consultant for the United Nations and the Better Work in Textiles and Garments project for the Bangladesh Ready-Made Garment Sector. Her research explores South Asian fashion cultures and she’s the founder of the Muslin Trust, dedicated to preserving Bangladeshi fabrics.
  • Serkan Delice is Senior Lecturer in Cultural & Historical Studies at LCF.His research explores the connections between fashion and politics, with attention to cultural appropriation and its relationship to racial and emotional capitalism, white supremacy and cultural imperialism. His work considers fashion production and consumption in the context of political dissidence, immigration and refugee movements in contemporary Turkey.
  • Divia Patel is a Senior Curator in the Asian Department of the Victoria & Albert museum. She was the co-curator of the Fabric of India exhibition and has written widely on contemporary design in India, thinking about fashion, graphics and interiors.
  • Cher Potter is LCF/V&A Senior Research Fellow in Design Futures, leading initiatives around African contemporary design at the V&A. Her project AfriDesignX brings together designers, technological innovators, curators and material culture scholars from six different cities across Africa to investigate how design responds to large-scale social and cultural change.
  • Michael McMillan is a visiting lecturer, playwright, artist and curator. His research focuses on the creative process, ethnography, oral histories, material culture and performativity. He was the curator behind the exhibition My Hair: Black Culture, Style & Politics at the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology in Cambridge and The West Indian Front Room at the Geffrye Museum. His research explores black British and diaspora style.
