The A Side: A Day in The Life
As a Manager, Data, Insight and Strategy @ UMR, you will be at the heart of a team of marketers, A&Rs and creatives on a mission to connect the music of yesterday to audiences of today, young and old, casual and dedicated.
The growth of heritage and catalogue music is more strategically important to Universal Music than ever before, and this role will place you at the heart of the action.
You will be the strategic nerve centre of the operation, providing the data, intelligence and critical thinking that informs and inspires decision making across the label. A growing element of the role is about the opportunity for UK heritage talent + repertoire internationally – and this will be an aspect of the proposition that you can invent and build out alongside the support of The Square and your stakeholders within UMR.
You will sit within and be powered by The Square team sat centrally within Universal Music UK. The Square are the in-house Intelligence and Strategy agency for the broader organisation, providing you with the resources, tools and support structure you need to excel within this role.
Providing input into both creative and commercial opportunities within the label, the role requires somebody who is equal parts analytical and imaginative. You will also need to a naturally critical thinker with an appetite for all things popular culture.
The B Side: Skills & Experience
Be Analytic
  • Comfortable with qualitative and quantitative information
  • Able to join the dots between different slices of information, bringing clarity, focus and structure to whatever you’re working on
  • A critical thinker interested in culture, people, music
  • Ideally, some experience with a basic suite of data + analytic tools
  • Ability to produce insight and data packs around UMR artists and repertoire
  • Ability to apply data and strategy to artist marketing and audience campaigns
  • Design and oversee any primary research opportunities (qual and quant) alongside The Square
  • Work with the wider The Square team to produce new data + insight tools for the broader UMR business
Be Creative
  • Shape coherent stories, arguments and narratives out of data
  • Work with marketers and creatives to ensure your work comes to life
  • Proactive in terms of innovation and new opportunity
  • Sensitive to artistry, and the artistic process
  • Identify and lead innovation opportunities across product, marketing and tech
  • Identify commercial and creative opportunities from the extensive UMR roster of artists and repertoire
Be A Communicator
  • Translate information into insight, bringing it to life to engage stakeholders across UMR and the wider business
  • Make the complex simple, and be comfortable presenting insight + strategy to a wider range of stakeholders across the organisation
  • Communicate/present/engage a variety of stakeholders around your work
  • Research, understand + communicate cultural trends relevant to the UMR business + artists
  • Deliver market and audience intelligence for a number of stakeholders, both internal (the wider UMR team) and external (artist managers)
Be Organised
  • Ensure all tasks are carried out in an organised and clear way
  • Work to deadlines, being able to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Carry out more basic duties with care and efficiency
Be Collaborative
  • Work closely with both the team at UMR and the wider centre of excellence at The Square
  • Build strong relationship with our roster of artists and managers
Personal Specification
  • Experience working in strategic or analytic roles – agency or client side
  • A strong understanding of basic principles of strategic planning
  • A natural communicator – personable and engaging
  • Experience working with a range of data sets – quantitative and qualitative
  • A passion for, and broad understanding of media and creative industries
  • A knowledge and interest in music across a wide variety of styles & genres
  • Organised and conscientious
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work to deadlines
  • Be proactive and show initiative when required
