Description

Closing Date: 06-Dec-2024

We’d all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That’s waiting for you at Sainsbury’s. Think about the scale it takes for us to feed the nation. The level of data, transactions and variety it involves. Then you’ll realise that ours is a modern software engineering environment because it has to be. We’ve made serious investment into a Tech Academy and into setting standards and principles. We iterate, learn, experiment and push ways of working such as Agile, Scrum and XP. So you can look forward to awesome opportunities in everything from AI to reusable tech.

Read below for your next opportunity....
Help our business make better decisions for communities, our customers and the planet
Since we set up shop in 1869, we’ve always had a strong sense of social, environmental and economic responsibility and an understanding that our success depends on society’s success. We want to help everyone eat better and through our Plan for Better sustainability agenda we are helping to drive lasting, positive change in the UK and internationally.
And we can’t afford to wait. The environmental and social challenges that are facing the world have never been greater. The food we eat, and how that food is produced, sourced, packaged and disposed of has major consequences. To drive change, we need to know how we’re doing. This Group Product Manager will coordinate our efforts to hold a mirror up to our business about our performance against our key commitments.
In partnership with your engineering manager, you’ll tackle knotty strategic questions to build out a robust roadmap and backlog. This, of course means prioritising effectively, escalating challenges as necessary and being hands-on with the development, delivering quality insight and innovative functionality into the hands of both colleagues and customers.
You'll work with a large variety of stakeholders to steer the direction of development, interacting frequently with senior leaders and working closely with a range of teams and third parties to make sure we’re ahead of the game and the legislation to lead the way in our field.
What I need to know:
You’re a dab hand at data – you understand how it can be used to influence decisions and, extra points if you’ve worked with it before for example managing data squads or building data visualisation products or dashboards.
You understand agile delivery and modern engineering practices, having worked directly with engineers, architects, and third parties, building real software.
You’ve led product teams before and are all over day-to-day product processes (agile ceremonies, user stories, prioritisation) and are as comfortable in the detail as with the bigger picture. More than that, you help your direct reports to step on and expand their product toolkit.
You can land messages clearly to stakeholders at all levels generating energy and driving consensus even when we’re having to make tough decisions.
What I need to show:
You’re a people person. You’ll have multiple direct reports, so we’d be counting on you to share your experiences, be a great coach and a human leader to make sure they also thrive at work.
Pragmatism, resilience and proactivity – there’s lots to do to get under the skin of our environmental impact, lots of teams to work with and imperfect data to wrangle. You need to be a self-starter to push ahead and bring the teams with you.
You can pivot. We often have to be reactive in this space for example in response to new legislation.
You’re dedicated to value balancing the customer, the tech and the and can articulate a compelling vision and goals for a group of products.
Curiosity. You keep your finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the industry and are aware of key trends influencing sustainability and your team’s group of products.
You want to get stuck into our product community driving it forward and continuously learning.
In return you’ll get:
  • Colleague discount across the multi-brands – Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat
  • Holiday allowance
  • Bonus scheme
  • Pension plan
  • Special offers on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers and more
Last couple of bits…
We’ve adopted a hybrid model, coming together for collaboration and to get to know each other better. We’re working flexibly – have a chat with us about what you need.
If you’ve read this far but are not 100% sure you’re there with your experience, still get in touch. The skills you do have are often more transferable than you think. Equally with such a large and growing tech team, it might be there’s something else that could suit you better. If you’d like to find out more head to Sainsbury's DTD.
