Are you a visionary designer with a passion for storytelling and brand excellence?
We are seeking a Senior Designer to join our dynamic Creative Team. As a pivotal member of our Brand Department, you will lead the charge in producing innovative and compelling creative work, from initial concept through to final delivery. You will manage key stakeholders, provide expert support and advice, and champion the Penguin Brand across all brand campaigns and internal projects. Your contributions will shape the creative vision and drive the commercial success of our department, ensuring our consumer-first output continues to captivate and inspire.
Key responsibilities:
  • Use your brand design expertise to champion the Penguin Brand and its application.
  • Understand and manage all phases of design from generating creative strategy and concepts, managing stakeholders, implementing feedback, final delivery, and retrospective learning.
  • Apply your understanding to seasonal campaigns, brand communications for our activities, initiatives and partnerships, sales-led and internal-facing briefs, including OOH, paid media, POS, and printed collateral.
  • Receive, interpret, and playback creative briefs and present creative treatments to the Design Lead and other stakeholders.
  • Take responsibility for and lead Penguin’s owned channel platform content while working with our Designer.
  • Collaborate with the Design Lead to produce toolkits, style guides, and templates to support campaign deliverables.
  • Be a creative problem solver and bring your expertise in creative strategy and thinking when responding to commercial and internal briefs.
  • Work alongside and commission a diverse range of creatives, and collaborate closely with the Brand Marketing Team, using our Insights Team to drive creative decision-making.
  • Manage a mid-weight Designer, take ownership of their workflow through planning and management of schedules, and provide support and guidance.
  • Support the Design Lead, deputising when necessary, and be a confident spokesperson for the Creative Team to the wider department and business.
  • Constantly scan the outside world for creative trends and ideas, bringing energy and enthusiasm to creative meetings and project work.
What you will bring:
  • Significant experience working in-house for a brand as part of a Creative or Brand team, or a similar background within an agency or freelance, with a deep understanding of marketing practices and campaign workflows.
  • A strong grasp of visual communications and the role each creative element plays, with experience in applying this to campaign deliverables such as OOH, paid media, POS, and printed collateral.
  • A passion for brand design, from foundational work like creating brand guidelines to executing project delivery.
  • Experience in producing toolkits, style guides, and managing production processes.
  • An ability to collaborate with design agencies, freelancers, and other creatives such as photographers and illustrators.
  • Confidence at commissioning and writing effective creative briefs, with a keen interest in strategic thinking to respond to commercial and internal briefs.
  • Proven line management experience, with resilience to absorb feedback and manage changes in direction.
  • A team player attitude with excellent communication skills, capable to form strong working relationships across the team, while also working independently when needed.
Our approach to hybrid working:
While our offices are places for you to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, having flexibility about where you work is just as important for doing your best work and for your wellbeing. So, we don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to how we work in different teams across Penguin Random House UK.
This is a hybrid role, based in our offices in London, as there are activities and meetings that you will need to support in-person. We are happy to discuss hybrid working arrangements with you during your recruitment process.
About Penguin:
We’re the UK’s largest publisher; made up of some 2,000 people and publishing over 1,500 books each year. Our doors are open to all kinds of talent. In a constantly evolving industry, we work hard to stretch the definition of the word publisher. Here, you’ll work with a breadth of talent who all play their part to make each of our books a success. Together, we make books for everyone because a book can change anyone.
Application deadline: Please submit your portfolio or website by 11:59PM on Wednesday 13th November. There is no need for you to submit a CV or cover letter, but we ask that the portfolio or website that you submit best represents the scope of your design work as this will form a critical part of our assessment process.
What you can expect from us:
Salary: Circa £40,000 dependent on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus bonus and benefits.
Our people are the heart of our business, and we work hard to support a culture of responsibility and recognition. Our benefits include:
  • Financial – income protection, life assurance, childcare allowance
  • Wellbeing – healthcare cash plan, critical illness cover, health checks
  • Lifestyle – enhanced parental leave, tech scheme, free and discounted books
