Job Introduction
The News Design team is a multi-platform, multidisciplinary team within BBC News.
We are responsible for the design and visualisation of a story end to end, across all platforms from our website and app to our flagship news broadcasts and social accounts. The team brings together digital designers, broadcast designers, and developers to provide compelling visual coverage of the biggest and most significant stories.
At BBC News we are significantly expanding our Newsletter offerings and as our Senior Digital Designer - Newsletters, you will work closely with the newly formed editorial Newsletters team, and will be responsible for developing a scalable design language for this growing portfolio of newsletters.
As a Senior Digital Designer specialising in Newsletters, you will play a crucial role in developing a design that scales and flexes across our growing collection of Newsletters.
You will be responsible for creating a wide range of graphic assets and treatments, including illustrations, montages, maps, charts, and infographics to accompany newsletter content. The ideal candidate will have a deep appreciation for editorial content and the ability to work autonomously, delivering high-quality, high impact designs at speed.
Main Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to understand the narrative and visual requirements of each Newsletter product.
  • Conceptualise and create highly engaging bespoke illustrations, montages, maps, charts, and infographics that effectively communicate complex ideas and data.
  • Develop a consistent, high impact visual style for all Newsletter assets that aligns with our brand guidelines and enhances the reader's understanding of the content.
  • Work with the newsletter CMS to test and explore the capabilities it can deliver. Advocate for data informed iteration, and A/B testing.
  • Develop component based solutions to address consistency at scale.
  • Work independently to initiate and execute design projects, ensuring timely delivery without compromising quality.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in visual digital design, incorporating innovative techniques to elevate our content.
  • Adapt designs for various digital platforms and devices to optimise user experience and engagement.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, including journalists and editors to ensure seamless integration of graphics into all parts of the user journey.
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback from stakeholders, continuously refining and improving the visual storytelling experience.
Are you the right person?
  • Experience in Graphic Design, UX Design or a related field.
  • Evidenced experience and creative flair as a digital designer, preferably in the editorial or news media industry.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma) and other relevant design tools.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing a diverse range of design projects, with a focus on editorial or storytelling focused content.
  • Excellent and evidenced understanding of typography, layout, and composition principles.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with a keen attention to detail, always advocating for the users, and bringing data to the discussion.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to work and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and requirements in a fast moving work environment.
  • Passion for editorial content and a problem solving mindset.
