The Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) combines the sense of enquiry and experimentation of Edinburgh College of Art with the rigour and international profile of the University of Edinburgh. ESALA is a large and diverse school with a significant international reputation that welcomes students and academic collaborations in a global domain. At the same time, it is a school deeply rooted in its Edinburgh context.
As part of the University of Edinburgh, we put academic research and design enquiry at the heart of our activities to ensure that our learning and teaching is constantly informed by new ideas and enquiry. We are outward looking and collaborate with institutions on an international stage. We also have close local collaborations with the School of Built Environment at Heriot-Watt University that capitalise on their complementary expertise. ESALA has secured an Athena SWAN bronze award for our continuing activities in improving our culture of equality and diversity.
We offer professional degrees in Architecture and Landscape Architecture, which are informed by a culture of understanding and transforming context, of craft and making and producing graduates with a well formed range of skills and experience. We host centres of excellence in Architectural History and Digital Media and Design.
We are part of Edinburgh College of Art within the University. Here we participate fully in the creative and experimental environment in our partner disciplines and continue to grow and develop cross disciplinary collaborations and learning opportunities.
