Joe Machine: From Crime to Fine Art / 3rd November, 7 - 9pm
We're incredibly excited to have Joe Machine kicking off our series of artists talks in Acrylicize's new event space, Studio 7. Join us to learn about his incredible life story & artwork over some beverages.
Joe Machine has had an extraordinary journey in the last four decades from a child witnessing hard core pornography and sailor knife fights, through petty criminal and youth prison, to a brilliant artist feted by the likes of renowned critic Edward Lucie-Smith, fashionable restauranter Mark Hix's CNB Gallery, and the erudite London Magazine.
His paintings have followed a similar trajectory, always manifesting as honestly and directly as possible his own experiences and concerns. The early work mostly had black backgrounds and showed the grim sexuality and violence he had witnessed in his early years. Subsequently he developed a deep rapport with nature, spending time alone in the woods, and spending hours on meticulous visual renderings of trees and flora.
Joe's most recent project is a series of Britannic Myths, based on stories written by London Magazine editor, Steve O'Brien and shown at the CNB Gallery, part of the Tramshed restaurant in Shoreditch.Joe's brilliant, original and meticulous technique, allied with his forthrightness, exploration and depth, elevates him to one of the country's leading contemporary artists- Charles Thomson
