The Texture of Air

The Texture of Air creates an archival record of two abandoned hospital buildings in London. Over a three year period, aural histories of past doctors, key workers and patients were recorded as research. Reflecting the fractured nature of these memories and the alternate histories they point too, the film’s image manifests through original footage, archival film, digital animation and LIDAR scans. The films composition was written and then performed within the hospital. Navigating the dramatically changing interiors of the space, the ensemble - made up of oboe, viola and violin - were recorded for the film as they moved between grand entrance halls to operating theatres and consultation rooms. The Texture of Air is on permanent display at UCLH as an expanded film installation comprising film, sculpture and photographic lightbox.
