Major investment has gone into enhancing the town centre public spaces of Bognor Regis, as well as a number of key landmarks. As part of this masterplan, HemingwayDesign were tasked with conceiving and articulating the exterior detail and interiors of the new “Tech Park” at the University of Chichester. We drew inspiration from traditional Sussex building methods to design a knapped flint exterior, whilst the interiors are driven by a modern material palette of site-cast concrete and powder coated steel, softened through oak detailing, birch ply cladding and linear acoustic baffles. Writeable walls, collaborative learning spaces and a technology workshop help embrace the University’s commitment to providing a research-based framework. Beyond providing resources for academic staff to improve their own abilities, the building reflects the University’s use of active education tools, such as problem-based learning and group work.
