About me
Hello! I'm Annelise Nelson and I'm a London-based graphic designer. My road to design enlightenment has been a sinuous one with many stories: I've previously been a scientist, a teacher, a sailor, and a management consultant. I've been collecting life experiences which all now feed into my design. I've recently graduated from Shillington College and truly believe that graphic design is AWESOME and that I've found my spiritual home amongst fellow designers. When I'm not on my computer I like to screenprint, dance—I LOVE dancing—cycle, sleep, eat, make things, be outside, and learn things.   • Alternative Finance: Corporate Report
    Alternative Finance: Corporate ReportBrief The University of Cambridge, in conjunction with Ernst and Young approached us to produce a report for their latest Alternative Finance research. Background The report needed to present the latest research and vast volumes of data in a manner that was both visually appealing as well as clear and concise. The report needed to appeal to academics, policy makers and business people. Also, the report had to follow the strict guidelines for co-branded publications of both parties. Concept Fin
  • Do the green thing
    Do the green thingThe production of beef is, on average, associated with significantly higher greenhouse gas emissions than the production of other meat. Cattle are also generally less land efficient than other farmed animals. So, we could all take up the fight against climate change by consuming a little less beef. Reducing our meat intake is the single most effective lever to reducing carbon emissions, and it's such an easy thing to do!
  • JUST FIT: Small Business Branding
    JUST FIT: Small Business BrandingBrief Create a name, brand mark and identity for a new high end sports underwear company. Background Celestine and Shola are starting up a business selling really high end sports undergarments. They are using the latest fabric technology to create products that help motivate people to really perform their best. Their aim is to create a beautiful and technically superior product that will boost people's confidence when they are exercising. Now I love exercise and the outdoors so I was THRILLED to join this project! Celestine and Shola want something tough and aggressive but also feminine and sexy. That's quite a challenge but I'm up for it! Concept I started this brief by doing a lot of research into the target demographic, and competitors. Even though I would consider myself part of this demographic, I needed to broaden my view. What I found was that there was a lot of competition but nothing that specifically stood out as being "tough and sexy". There were quite a few feminine options in the sportsbra area but nothing quite like what we were trying to do. We started the process by coming up with name options based on our key values and hit on "FIT". It was perfect! The undergarments would fit like a glove, you could get fit, and as the British say you're fit if you're sexy! ;) With the name in the bag, we then needed a mark. As it was to appear on garments, we wanted a symbol as well as a typographic option. We explored several options, and many more iterations of the shortlisted ideas until we decided upon an hourglass motif. We've combined that with a "funky" typeface to set the tone of voice too. There is more to come on this project so stay tuned!
  • Spoke: Small Business Branding
    Spoke: Small Business BrandingPersonal Project Create a brand mark and identity for a new bicycle shop. Background Shop owner Jack loves bikes and everything associated with them (as do I) and his shop is a reaction to escalating fuel prices and people's desire to get fitter and enjoy the outdoors. The shop is for bike enthusiasts of all shapes and sizes and sells items for all price points and ages. Jack wants customers to feel comfortable in the store whether they are first timers to seasoned lycra types. The staff are expert at all things bike, but above all they are approachable, personal and hands on. Concept I took a real close look at a bicycle for this brief! I went through the names of all the parts and decided I like the sound of "spoke". It hinted at cycling without being obvious. It also meant that I could explore spokes—how they are threaded, what they look like from different angles—and use that to inform my design of graphic elements. The result is a custom typeface and a clean, friendly yet technical identity. I had a lot of fun with the "bespoke" range for more specialist equipment too!
  • Reverb: Sound Art Festival Campaign
    Reverb: Sound Art Festival CampaignPersonal Project Create a name, logo and visual identity for a new global sound art festival. The identity package must be suitable for roll out onto all event collateral. Background The new festival is an event of the senses, celebrating the diverse methods of sound art and offers an immersive range of concerts, presentations, installations and exhibitions. The event aims to restore the emphasis on the act of listening. The event organisers want the identity package to convey that this is the most forward thinking, progressive, and awe-inspiring event the world has ever seen. It is epic! Concept Researching for this brief was a lot of fun. I loved finding out all about audiophiles. There is a LOT of passion here; a real sense of single-minded devotion to the purity of sound and how it can make you feel. It's like loud bass that you can feel through your body, or music that makes your hairs stand on end. It is all about that emotional connection; the way that hearing can remind you that you are alive. The name was narrowed down to reverb for the simple reason that reverb is the remainder of sound that exists in a room after the source of the sound has stopped. It is the legacy of the sound. To capture that feeling in the type lockup and graphic elements was tricky but I used a strong perspective to create movement and a sense of time. Large expansive landscape images were also the dish of the day.
  • Legal Tender
    Legal TenderBrief Design the homepage and feature page for the legal service startup 'Legal Tender'. Background Nicholas' startup 'Legal Tender' is a web based platform where businesses can manage their legal partners, projects and spend quickly and easily. As the startup is growing, the existing webpages needed to be updated and a new features page created. Using the existing brand guidelines as a starting point, the aim was to really show off the product and convey how easy and accessible the product is to use. The pages had to look professional but not stuffy. Also, the legal profession is notorious for using inaccessible language so it was imperative that the language used here was as clear and concise as possible! Concept These sites needed to feel like a breath of fresh air to the people who commission legal work so my aim with this brief was to really keep everything clean and simple. Wherever possible I reduced text and used images and icons to convey the information. Large or full bleed images, as well as different coloured backgrounds, helped create sections, show off the product and also create a feeling of space on the pages.
