Howdy! My name's Eli, I'm based in Manchester, UK. I'm a Shillington College graduate with excellent Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator skills. I do all of my own Illustration, Art Direction, Photography and all my own stunts.
Since completing my course I have worked as a Design Intern at Esquire magazine helping the design team to generate concepts and solutions for a variety of photoshoots and illustrations. I also helped to brief photographers with what was required for different shoots; designed, proof-read and presented final pages for print in the Jan/Feb issue, taking amendment notes from various editors. I also learnt to use the Hearst collaborative production programme CenShare. Since completing my course I have also taken on freelance design projects including logos, branding projects, and staff manuals. This involved estimating time to completion so that I could give realistic quotes to clients and create concepts to fit their needs. During my time at college I completed weekly projects, working to strict deadlines. I practiced a wide variety of skills including design, layout, photography, image research, art working and creating a series of mock ups. I worked on briefs for a number of identity and branding projects which are reflected in my portfolio. The course also taught me to manage my time effectively whilst working full time and to be self motivated in my design work.
I am incredibly hardworking - evidenced by my working full time as a cafe manager whilst studying. I am highly motivated and work well both individually and in collaboration with others; I learn fast and am very keen to expand my skillset. I used the opportunity of being furloughed during lockdown to learn the fundamentals of coding in html and Python, and am now trying to focus on expanding my skillset to include UX and UI.
In my previous role at The Artisan Cafe I was responsible for social media, promotions, designing print advertisements and menu boards in keeping with the brand guidelines. I also designed the logo, branding, website and window decals for the onsite artisan bakery - Toast The Eccleshall Bakery. In my most recent role as a General Bar Manager I managed the pub's social media account and events calendar, taking promotional pictures and writing copy.
In addition to my creative pursuits I have a BA (Hons) in Film & Media Studies and a MA in Gender Studies. I am passionate about food, craft beer and cafe culture and in my previous job as a cafe manager I cultivated this passion through packaging and logo design; as well as striving for the perfect latte art. In my spare time I enjoy cycling, travel and hiking.
Projects
- SOFT LAD*LIVE PROJECT* Brand management and logo design for an upcoming EP. For this project I have used illustrations and text on Illustrator with a gradient to reflect the dreamy ethereal feel of the music. I combined artboards in Photoshop to create a gif. I will also be working as a Video Production Assistant for the forthcoming music video.
- Toast - Eccleshall BakeryA local artisan bakery with a focus on craftsmanship. Toast is a bakery set in the rear of a cafe in a small middle class town with a customer base of families and over 40s. The aim of the logo and branding project was to design a logo that would encapsulate the baker's passion for real bread without alienating the customer base. The lettering was hand drawn. The logo is circular reflecting the shape of the banetons used to bake the bread. The logo also contains 13 lines - a baker's dozen. The
- Urban SolutionsA corporate report to mobilise employees Urban Solutions is a modern residential company who are keen to offer their staff the opportunity to become more involved in the company. They aim to engage their employees who are mostly in their 20s and 30s with an eye-catching new layout for their corporate report. The colour palette was chosen from a possible twelve options approved by the company. The graphic devices are based on the shapes of the Urban Solutions logo and this theme is rolled out throughout the report adding an element of whimsy without compromising on professionalism.
- Waves of ChangeA festival to mobilise the community This project is designed to promote a community festival which encourages local residents to take a greater interest in reducing, reusing, and recycling. The key demographic is local families and young people. The hand-cut lettering is an erratic and quirky indicator of the make, do, and mend ethos of the festival. The vibrant colour palette reflects the diversity of the community, incorporating the we are what we do brand colour. The use of waves as a graphic device adds energy and reinforces the festival's mission to create waves of change amongst attendees.
