Multidisciplinary designer, particularly interested in social, cultural, environmental and political issues. I am particularly interested in community involvement based projects and feel that it is important for everyone to be encouraged to be creative in one way or another. My work is currently based around of health and using interaction to prompt people to question and have confidence to actively improve lifestyle choices.
Projects
- FIL(L)FULL OF ALTERNATIVESFillwood Community centre in the area of Knowle West is coming up to its 80th birthday. Many people have stopped using the area and prominade of shops and have migrated to the inner city. They asked a large group of us to come in an re-imagine the space; we did so with a sci-fi lens and narative, thinking big and fanciful, taking inspiration from Antanas Mockus. A group of four of us collated all ideas into a set of templates and then into an A3 format where it was exibhited and given to the co
- Visualising Research around Food, Health and EconomicsDisplaying quotes and statistics from a series of talks during Bristol Healthy City week. Some very interesting points made about food being medicine - the main angle of my current project. Something I feel passionately about is the fact that 'health food' is so innacessable for low income families so I approached Betterfoods and put some signs up around the store in a world that 'imagines the door is open to everyone'.
- Food for thought - HempHaving read lots around the Hemp plant and numerous conversations, I realised there was a common misunderstanding, and definite lack of education around the versatile plant. It's versatile make-up has allowed it to be used in many ways and over thousands of years. It is wrongly condemned for its relationship to its psychoactive cousin Cannabis. Using a range of papers, recycled and hemp, the book aims to educate and bring awareness to the many uses of the plant, explainging why it holds such legislation and offering some recipes for the incredibly healthy ingredient.
- Bees I find it fascinating how much our lifestyle, both edible and non-edible crops are dependent on bees. Following on from an article I had read, I conducted a research project based around the decline of bees. From my findings I created a coffee-table book with the aim it would be dipped in and out of with residing information about the amazing creatures. I have sold a couple of copies of this book but I feel that bees are such an important part of our infrastructure that it would be really good to get the books into schools to educate younger generations.
- Playing with Type A redesigned, reconsidered version of Dr Seuss’ book. It aims to be used as a tool of comfort for children with colour and shape theory in mind. The book aims to soothe create intimacy, encourage spirituality, wisdom and creativity in children (5-9 yrs) through the use of specific colours, organic shapes and layout. There was also an element of experimental typography, with the whole book being written with my unnatural left-hand.
- Freeganise MeRecording research into food waste, particularly in Bristol and taking inspiration from the documentaries Supersize me and Superhigh me, we wanted to experience what it was like to be a Freegan. We did this by going on regular bin drives, mostly proving unsuccessful as many supermarkets destroy disposed food. Since the documentary we have all continued to skip dive using this otherwise wasted food to cook. The closing credits were inspired by the opening credits of Napoleon Dynamite, using the plate to convey a message, in our case post dinner. We created a soundtrack using nothing but kitchen appliances, utensils, and our instruments made from recycled objects which can be heard at 4.4.. The project included DVD package, CD graphic, information and photos about the film as well as a how to guide and free bin key to help people help target food waste.
