I’m an experienced art director and graphic designer who has worked with some of the most prestigious style and arts publishers in the world (Esquire, Independent on Saturday, Thames & Hudson), lifestyle brands (TagHeuer, Schweppes, Wella Professionals, Fallen Vodka and the development charities Care International and Malaria Consortium. My work is recognised for a typographic approach and I’m very passionate about beautifully crafted print design. In fact, I’m so passionate I wrote and art directed a book on the subject, Collector's Edition, which was published by Thames & Hudson last August, that is a showcase for the new wave of limited/deluxe/special edition graphic design for the music, book and magazine industries. I’m a self motivated designer, having worked under the studio name Transmission for the last 6 years, where I confidently work across multiple projects, and am organised at all levels of design from conception, art direction to production. My works noticed too, which was exemplifies by my cover art direction for Disappear Here magazine, which was commended by Computer Arts magazine as one of the ‘Best 200 Design Moments Ever!’ (May 2012). I often create bespoke typography and image making that is tailored to compliment individual brands, non-fiction book covers and publishing projects. For the Sci-Fi-London film festival I developed a bespoke infographic/typographic design, centred around the theme 'Life in 2050’, that represented scientific and social predictions for the year 2050. To raise publicity for the film festival I curated an art exhibition and directed a cinema trailer utilising my typographic design. I often art direct visual culture books and for ‘Clothes For Heroes’, a fashion book about the creative partnership between Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, I created an original typographic headline design using torn fabrics and paint stencils to reference the designers style during that period. We specialise in content creation and implementation of coffee table books, magazines and branding projects for clients in the style, music and visual arts industries. Originally founded by Stuart Tolley, an experienced art director and Thames & Hudson published author, Transmission consists of a small team of dedicated designers, project managers and journalists. Art direction for the quarterly music, fashion and youth culture magazine. Duties included cover art direction and commissioning illustrators and photographers to accompany editorial articles.
Art direction and design for the bi-monthly 'J', a in-flight travel and lifestyle magazine created for Jazeera airways. Responsibilities included cover art direction, commissioning illustration and photography and print management.
Art direction and design for customer magazines and brand design for TagHeuer, French Connection, Schweppes, Moet & Chandon, Mumm Champagne and the quarterly Fashion Week magazine.
While employed at the iconic style magazine Sleazenation, the magazine was awarded silver for 'best use of typography' and 'best magazine' design.
