Any advice on how to find a copywriter that gels with my brand?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a copywriter to help me with the copy I need for my business.
I'm new to outsourcing and have no idea on how to brief / find or even find a good fit for what we need.

any thoughts?

  • Hi Mel, I agree with others here that posting a brief is the best way to find new people. You'll get lots of people's websites to go through but it's a great way of building up a little black book of talent for you to tap into when you need to. Linkedin or here on The Dots is the best place to start. Hope this helps, Tamryn
  • If you can’t find them, help them find you by posting a brief.

For gel and fit think about:

Roles, involvement, depth of understanding (copywriter, editor, strategist).

The vital point that makes your business different.

An example of how this problem has been solved already.

    Tone of voice.

    Mission, vision and position.

  • Hi @Mel Brown You're fishing in a good place! What you're looking for are writers who can demonstrate they understand branding, can run with a tone of voice and bring it to life, understands that the brand defines what you do, how you do it or talk about it, and what else, as a brand, you find relevant, engaging or think it's important to share with your audiences. If they can demonstrate that capability, bingo. As @Robbie Masters suggests, a test brief is a great idea, but you should be able to judge what they have done for other brands, the more the better, so you can see a genuine agility in their writing.
Of course, it helps if you have a well defined brand and well articulated tone of voice in the first place, otherwise there will be a some experiemental stumbling to get through. If you haven't, well that's the fun bit, I'd be happy to help but you might look for a writer who's done these exercises before, they usually go hand-in-hand with the ability to express ToV.
    Hope that helps!
  • Hi Mel,

As well as interviewing to get a sense of experience and cultural fit, I would recommend asking for writing samples / a portfolio and being really clear with your brief. While not all writers will have exactly what you’re after, they might show a good range or a piece for you to reference. A great copywriter can adapt to suit any style given time and feedback, but you’ll get there much quicker by working with someone who’s written in a similar style before. You can also give them a small paid assignment to start with such as a blog post or series of social media posts to see if they’re a good fit. If it turns out they’re not, you still get some ideas to work with / content to edit and they still get paid.

    Hope this helps,
    Robbie
  • Hi Mel, have you tried Upworks or Fievrr? There are lots of copywriters and you can certainly try and ask for samples to see if the writing fits your brand and style.
