Does anyone have advice for a young writer looking to get into the content/copywriting industry?

  • @Maxine Harrison Hey. Thanks for sharing the link to the SEO course! It's really useful and packs a lot into 1 hr 30. Great blog post as well :)
  • Hi Taiwo, there are many routes into the industry. I stumbled into copywriting via communications. I did an internship with a PR agency after graduating and realised I enjoyed the writing bit the most. I put myself forward for any writing needs in the company and then used that to build a CV/portfolio that helped me get more writing-focused jobs. Being able to share writing samples is crucial: this doesn't have to be a full branded project, it can be anything as long as it conveys your thinking! Hope this helps.
  • Hey Taiwo. I head up marketing/community for a content and writing agency. If you wanted to get in touch for a chat, let me know! My email is cat@sonderandtell.com.
  • Hi there - this might help (ignore the IRL networking bit for now, obvs)

  • Hey Taiwo, if you were meaning copywriting on the conceptual/advertising side (ie where you’d be teamed up with an Art Director as part of a creative team) I recommend looking into the West Herts College (Watford) Copywriting and Art Direction Diploma, taught by Tony Cullingham. It’s a 1 year course that used to be based in Watford but now is taught ‘in the field’ as it were, in various ad agencies in London.
  • Hey Taiwo

I don’t have any first hand copywriter experience but stumbled across tips whilst building my e-commerce website. Mailchimp has a huge number of articles about writing great blogs/landing pages that could supplement other advice below :)
  • @Taiwo Bali I have a blog post on more about SEO: https://remireports.com/what-is-seo-and-why-is-it-important-3-search-engines/ I learnt using a free course on Udemy which I found really helpful on Google SEO https://www.udemy.com/course/seo-beginners/learn/lecture/7904790?start=0#overview

    Hi Patrick!

Thank you for this nudge in the right direction. I will definitely check this out.

    Thank you!

    Hi Maxine,

Thank you so much for replying.

I am actually looking to get into full time employment so I can get some good experience into transition into freelance.

Something has been telling me to learn SEO! Thank you for confirming how important it is. I’ve started off watching some YouTube video on the subject. How did you learn?

  • Hi Taiwo, I have been freelancing as a digital writer for almost 2 years now and have done some copywriting through this. I would say master SEO as it is a key way to help grow your client's audience. Are you hoping to enter the industry as a freelancer or full tiem employee?
  • Hi Taiwo, hope you are well. This from @Vikki Ross - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/lets-talk-you-vikki-ross, could be a start? Keep safe
