Does anyone know good photography competitions you can enter to get recognition? Also, would that be career ladder for getting jobs?

A friend of mine who is a music photographer is struggling to find work/connections especially because of pandemic there are no live events and performances. He thinks entering competitions and getting recognition would lead to getting works. Would that be a good idea? If so is there a good competition to enter?
Would be great to get some career advice.

Thank you!

  • @Sarah Boris Thank you! These sites all look promissing! I will tell him to keep an eye on thses open calls. I think as well as music phtographers, all his musician friends are feeling down at the moment as they can do any live performances. Doing a story about them would be great way to show the world what they are going through at the moment. Thanks! :)
  • Hello

Photomeet is a great photo community and often has open calls.
    https://photomeet.org/
Here are a couple of other platforms which regularly have open calls and more:
    https://www.worldphoto.org/
Aperture is great to follow, they have portfolio and photobook awards:
    https://aperture.org/entry/

It might also be worth keeping eyes on platforms such as Paris Photo, Photo London, Foam etc. They often share opportunities and might have some.

In the meantime I would recommend that your friend creates a project and submits it to various platforms as well as sharing the photos online on his own platforms (social medi / microsite). It could be a project about musicians in lockdown. He could photograph them from their window or doorstep or in the park. Photos of empty venues could be very nice too. He can then submit the full series to Guardian etc.
  • Competitions are great, but has he thought about shooting behind the scenes for a band and telling a story through that? Or maybe as the venues are closed and no one in them, maybe there's a story there too. Getting featured is a great springboard to getting more work, might be worth checking out sites like: https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/ and https://www.itsnicethat.com/
  • Not so much a compeition, but I know there are pages on instagram that you can submit photos to and they show case your work
