- Hi Callum, is this to work with arts organisations? A great place to look would be https://www.a-m-a.co.uk (The Arts Marketing Association). Or, have a loot at the Arts Council's online job board. There are opportunities out there if you know where to look. ;-)Also, have you tried any volunteering? I did a weekend of volunteering at a gallery when I was first venturing out into creative roles. As I volunteered, they bent over backwards to support my goals. It lead to bigger and better things!
- Hey CallumSounds super interesting... I bet you have a few dream organisations you’d work within? I wonder if you can pin down what this art marketing role would entail, what do you imagine you’d be doing day in day out...Perhaps you could do a bit of detective work to see what roles exist within different organsiations (there’s quite a lot of nuance in there ... and different organisations handle marketing differently, I’ve come across brand managers, exhibition managers, design managers, production controllers, heads of design... all having a lot of agency in how a gallery or organisation goes about there marketing) so there’s loads to look at there even if it seems a bit adjacent to the dream role you’re interested in.In no way am I saying give up on your dreams, but there might be an element of there being no vacancies in your dream role so it might be good to build towards getting that role. Have you reached out to any people aready working in the marketing departmnents of arts organisations and asked what there career progression was? Could be a good way to say hello and find out some career tips.
- Sometimes its hard to get the ideal job you want, if all else fails, try something similar in skill sets but perhaps in another part of the creative industry. Companies will see the transferrable skills your developing and then the right opportunity may pop up.
- @Vikki Ross Agree. Then ask them for any projects or support you could offer
- Get a mentor either on the Dots or the British Library Business & IP Centre.
- Hi Callum, have you tried contacting people you'd like to work with? Building relationships is often a better way in than just applying for vacancies.More advice in here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/work-get-vikki-ross
- Hey Callum,I don't know too much about the art world specifically, but for entry level jobs in marketing I'd consider:- Looking into agencies as well as clients (often more entry level roles where you can try working on lots of different clients)- Prioritising advertised roles, and always tailoring your CV and cover letter to the role- Look into what you can do on your own to build up some experience (eg. finding an artist or small gallery you like and offering to support their marketing)Hope that helps, Lex x
