I have an interview next week for the position of Sportswear Designer and Developer; what are the main questions that could come up?

I would love to know what typical questions could come up and how to answer or best prepare for them. I will also need to come across as confident and assertive, how can I not let the nerves get the better of me?

  • Hello Tabby,

We tend to forget interviews are two ways. You're interviewing the employer too. So perhaps prepare a set of questions that you would like to ask them, it could be on the team, projects, potential training, how the pandemic affected them and how they worked remotely. I think this will show curiosity on your part but also it will help you gage if you would like to work with them as much as if they would like to work with you.

I hope your interview goes well.

    Best of luck,

    Sarah
  • Hi Tabby,

I would say before anything keep your cool but stay curious and interested. One big life lession I would say for my younger self to learn overcome of nervousness it doesn't lead for any good. It's hard but learnable. It can be very useful if you practice the situation.

In case of questions you will be asked about work history, education, technical skills, describing previous relevant projects, why you would like to work in the company and what values you can bring in the company.
  • Hi Tabby

Loads of great advice as ever from Vikki.

I’d like to add something about creating and demonstrating your value.

Interviews are actually value exchanges. You’re seeking confidence and insight that this workplace will develop you and satisfy your career ambitions as much as they’re seeing if you can fulfil the role.

Therefore, it’s great to arm yourself with how you’d create specific value in some areas of pain they may be feeling focussed on the role.

You can find this out from the job brief, your experience or from some intel from people you know in the company.

That way, you can position your experience as the painkiller to that immediate pain and the vitamin to strengthen the team.

There’s also a wonderful technique that you can use that will help you identify what kind of questions to ask that will give you even more clarity on the role.

I’ve made all these available as a free download on my website -

    Hope that helps.

    Stay Boom!
  • @Vikki Ross Thank you for this great advise Vikki, I really appriciate it. Once I've done my reserach on the company I'm sure I'll have lots of questions I'd like to ask them.
  • Congratulations! Try to be excited rather than nervous. And curious - this is an opportunity for you to interview them as much as they'll interview you. It's a two-way conversation, and a chance for you to see if you'd like to work for and with them. So approach it like like-minded people meeting for a chat rather than going somewhere for someone to judge you. Also, you wouldn't have got this far if they weren't interested in you so that should help with your confidence too. Failing all that, just make sure to breathe slowly and deeply to calm any nerves.

I like to ask things like "What would a typical day look like for me?" and "What would you expect me to do if I started tomorrow?" because I like to be able to imagine myself there.

Good luck. You'll be fine. If you're not and it doesn't work out, there'll be other opportunities so you can just put this one down to experience.
