Is anyone into NFT? And if so which platform? And how do you promote your NFT work?

  • @Ruminate Studio strange world the NFT one...I'm into but I think I don't have the complete clue...
  • @Daniel Hawley-Lingham sure take on your point - my main thing is to research how brands are taking pratices, not emulate them, just see what brands are doing to get an idea of a road map and their design thinking. NFTs in general are not sustainable - just best to take a broader point of view on what people are doing as a point of adding to your knowledge base.
  • @Ruminate Studio I disagree about following the biggest brands. This is not necessarily the most ethical path to take. In some cases it's a scramble for a piece of the pie and that is part of the problem. The main thing to consider is your audience/customer development and onboarding. For many people NFTs are massively toxic and my suggestions are that an organisation should think about mitigating those fears, stopping points etc. The larger the brand the greater the responsibility - however, the attitide towards money and profit above all else seems all pervading and ethical practices are not of the highest consideration as well we know when we look at the track record of Apple to take just ine example.
  • @Fabiana Belmonte USD or any other fiat currency (a countries legal tender) are not crypto currencies. It looks like crypto.com uses it's own native blockchain. Your NFT value on this platform is actually measured in CRO tokens and they present that as an equivilant $USD value. I am not sure how green they are or what methodology they use for their ledger but they do claim to be more efficient (but I am not sure what that is in comparison to). It's not clear to me where this platform sits. Basically if you mint, sell, buy NFTs you are dealing in cryptocurrency... I am not sure how you show a stable USD value against an item that is actually a cryptcurrency.
  • @Fabiana Belmonte - good stuff, look at:
    https://cryptochampionsnft.io/
    https://rtfkt.com/

Study what the biggest brands are doing and how they are laying out road map and a bigger picture, thats the way to get a true following - for a long term plan
  • @Daniel Hawley-Lingham agree. Mine are sold in dollars, is it harmful for environment, too? I choose this currency because I thought was less polluting... About quality it's just incredible how many horrible things people buy, wasting a lot of money! I have my profile here https://crypto.com/nft/profile?tab=created but for me is not so easy to sell them, as people seems to appreciate pixel "art" more... I don't understand honestly
  • @Ruminate Studio thanks! I have both Discord and Twitter account for it, but it's very difficult to find collectors! I sell to be honest, but always to the same two collectors. About quality I totally agree: most of NFTs I see are completely horrible I don't understand why people waste such a lot of money for them! I sell my works, you can see them here https://crypto.com/nft/profile?tab=created
  • For NFT, try to create something which brings real world utility, instead of the just the JPEG most people are doing. Common places have a twitter and discord to promote and grow community - thats the main thing - dont rush for uploading artwork - as there is no audience or demand - hope that helps :)
  • many people with valid arguments as to why you might want to steer clear of NFTs. It's a 'money first' market - like all of our capitalist markets - it's new and surrounded by hype. Most peoples opinions are based on standard media reactions to crypto, and NFTs are a focal point of that intangible world for a number of reasons. Most of the worlds fiat currency is concentrated into the hands of the few - so that as an argument for not entering seems ridiculous from the perspective of our own active engagement in the capitalist paradigm - there is no real visible alternative so it remains somewhat specious. That's not to say it's stable though and not full of scammers, hackers, and rug pullers. Enter with caution as a buyer. The second strong argument against is one that correctly links minting with massive energy use. Blockchains were developed that way as part of the security system based on something called 'power of work' (POW - look it up). The popular crypto currencies like ethereum are based on that power hungry system and by association the NFTs minted on the currency blockchain use that system. Etherium has for a long time now stated that it will move to a much less power hungry blockchain processing called 'power of stake' (POS - look it up) but has not yet managed to do so. There are 'clean' (depends on your definition) currencies already using POS such as Tezos who sponsor numberous top end art events. Built on this blockchain - in the same way that opensea is built on etherium - are a few community run frameworks for minting NFTs using Tezos. One better known is Hic Et Nunc (here and now) which has now forked to a community (DAO attempt) run hub Teia.art for minting 'clean' and 'green' NFTs at a massively reduced cost both energy wise and financially. It's not as popular or media hyped as etherium. The third and also specious argument that the NFT world is full of shit art is an argument applicable anywhere. I see masses of crap produced by people who have no idea... and none of them are NFTs. It doesn't matter if a lot of it is rubbish, or that some use the system with questionable motives. You don't have to. As a final point to make, NFTs do provide opportunity for artists producing digital, generative art that doesn't fit into the traditional mould of gallery spaces or who can't get entry into the elitist organisations becuase they don't have the credentials that the gatekeepers are looking for. I know artists who have no way of really selling their work in other capacities. To say that they are idiots is a little myopic. To say they are greedy is rediculous. To think they funded Elon Musk is nuts - NFTs make up a very small percentage of the cryptocurrency world - currently about 1%
  • @christopher conway I asked the question and I see there is an energy issue that cannot be ignored
  • @christopher conway I’m not the one who asked the question. And I also didn’t start Ukraine DAO, it was founded by people in Ukraine and Russia, you can support it here https://www.partybid.app/party/0x4508401BaDe71aE75fE70c97fe585D734f975502
  • @Anna Rose Kerr the energy I use with my work is for my own survival, it's how I do business and it's at a domestic level of use in my home. Selling art through a system that only allows cryptocurrencies is wasteful. I agree blockchains and cryptocurrency does have some benefits, but 95% of cryptocurrencies are held by extremely wealthy people and become more wealthy through this artist craze of getting rich quickly. The sheer use of electricity used to create 1 coin is astonishing. I posted recently an article from the Guardian

    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/feb/18/bitcoin-miners-revive-fossil-fuel-plant-co2-emissions-soared

A bitcoin company actually bought a coal power station in the US just to run their computers to mine for cryptos.

To mine a bitcoin, they have made the code harder to break with every coin that is mined, forcing the computers to work harder and burn more energy to work out the next coin.

How many tonnes of CO2 did you release into the air, or promote a magnetism for wealth against the poor to help the Ukrainians. Was that the only option open to you? How dare you use them as justification!
  • @christopher conway anytime anyone views one of your projects online it has an environmental toll. Who do you host your files with? Amazon? Is you making more money more worthy of the planet’s destruction than an artist sharing their work?

Over the past couple of days a DAO I’m involved in has raised about 4million USD for Ukrainians in need, through an NFT project. Is that project also a waste of our resources?

Everything is relative. There’s a lot to critique about NFT, but would love to be having a more nuanced conversation about how we fix it and use it for good, with this community!
  • @Geoffrey Bunting most of NFT I see are shit and it's true. I don't think mine are shit anyway
  • Plenty of people are into NFTs. They're idiots, but they're out there and waiting for the next idiot so they can finally unload their shit.
  • Hi Fabiana,

There is a few platform but some of them invitation only. Opensea is the one main if you have no invitation but there are also smaller ones. Also as others mentioned the invironmental impact and so that is why you might want to use some of them that considered more 'green'.

In case of advertising go Twitter!
  • I mint with Polygon on OpenSea. Although less power intesive than straight Ethereum, there is of course an environmental aspect to consider - as with literally everything online, until we switch to renewables. But if you keep your file sizes down - and ensure your pension isn't invested in oil companies - you'll be alright.

This is a collection some friends and I are working on: https://opensea.io/collection/horizonlines. I've shared it amongst some Discord chats that I'm in with female / NB artists, but haven't promoted more widely.

I'm fundamentally not interested in the notion of "ownership", and there are a lot of NFTs with very questionable aesthetic quality that certainly make the whole thing look like a joke. But hey, if you find an interesting way to express yourself through generative or code based art... or even if you can make some bank from the cryptobros who run the space, good luck to you! Share a link if you do decide to mint!
  • @Fabiana Belmonte best to research to get the facts right, but here's an idea: "the average NFT suggest it is equivalent to the monthly footprint of someone living in the EU"
"NFTs share one harmful trait with their cryptocurrency cousins: they both use a ton of energy. Bitcoin ‘mining’ already generates 38 million tons of CO2 per year, more than the carbon footprint of Slovakia. And a 2018 study published in Nature Climate Change found Bitcoin emissions alone could raise Earth’s temperature by two degrees."
This is the reason NFTS (and people who use them) are so highly shit on and judged, and often blocked, on places like twitter. They should have never been invented and people who use them that are aware of this information are just selfish. We're literally already in a state of climate change where our planet may be almost unlivable for future generations.. please stick to other art. Kids will thank you.
