Looking to start creating my own typography sets but I’m relatively new to type design. Does anyone have recommended software to use?

Or any books/resources for beginners (tutorials, theory etc)

  • I just started to design some type too. I did some tutorials with Glyphs, and it's a userfriendly and intuitive software. There are two versions Glyphs and Glyphs mini, and you can try them both for a month for free.
  • i have used fontforge https://fontforge.org/en-US/ easy to use and tutorials on youtube are clear also.
  • In case you want to test waters before committing to a "proper" type software, there is a plugin for Illustrator (there is a version for PS and Illy too) called Fontself. It generates regular fonts, but may lack some very niche features others have. The + side is that the interface is super simple, and you can still work with your actual AI workflow. Hope it helps!
