Many people are trying to start new projects and side hustles right now. Any advice on getting started and sticking with your new hustle?

  • Side hustles are great and something that's kept me sane even before this whole pandemic. Personally, I wouldn't do too much overthinking about it. It's all about 'doing' and trying things out. If you think 'how can I monetisize it' or 'how can more people hear about it'- it's game over. Why? because it's all about doing something that makes you feel good. If you can gain something more than that then great but if no one knows about it, it shouldn't matter. As soon as your side-hustle becomes 'work', it looses it's appeal and that's when it gets abandoned. So concentrate on that rewarding feeling when you are tapping into your passion point and the rest should follow. Good luck! x
  • I agree with @Sarah Boris here, we're all rushing to find a new normal right now and maybe by forcing yourself into something will only lead to a quick burnout for both you and your business. Here's some thinking point from me:

Most side hustles start with an expertise for something, so take this into consideration when choosing your path.  Deciding to do something you’re not fully versed in will mean a lot more time learning and developing your expertise before you are at a place where you’re able to charge for it.   Make it a hobby first and learn before you launch. You’ll save yourself a lot of frustration and will avoid angry clients if you aren’t able to deliver as promised.

Starting your own business on the side has a lot more moving parts than you might expect, especially if you’re a product company.  Creating a website, organising shipping and logistics, online and offline marketing, seasonality, payment platforms… the list goes on. For any side hustle, save time by doing your research in advance and use this to create a roadmap of how to move forward.  Your research will inform you about what are the must haves for your business in comparison to the nice to haves.

TELL PEOPLE! So many people keep side hustles on the down-low and they fizzle out. Not only does telling people make it seem more concrete so that you are more likely to follow through with it, you'll also be inviting people to share their experiences and give you some advice.  Although this may sometimes be unsolicited, feedback can be a gift and help you think through things you hadn’t considered.  So say it out loud and make it real!
  • Hey Amelia! This is my favourite topic as I help my clients start portfolio careers that are sustainable and profitable. Below are some early thoughts for you to ponder
    - Choose your idea wisely - most people get into an 'ideas haze' between too many ideas and not enough and when you are confused about what you want to do and who you will serve it's a recipe for disaster
    - Identify your 5Ws -
Who - who do you want to serve?
Where - where do you want to sell?
Way - what is the way you want to build out your side hustle?
What - what skills/strengths are you using or playing to for success?
Why- what values does this hustle contribute or slign with?
    - Then I think it's important to stress test the strand or new side hustle
by asking; what is the market opportunity?, what connections do I already have in this field to hit the ground runninng, what are my potential revenue options and what is ease of entry?

If you want to break this down properly my book Love it Or Leave It- How to be happy at work has a whole chapter on How to build a portfolio career (Chapter 10). I break down ideation, testing a quick MVP (minimum viable product), how to market yourself when you do many things, revenue modelling and maintaining momentum without burning out.

  • Hello Amelia,

If you want to start a new hustle that's great but I also feel you should not feel like you have to, nor feel pressure to do so because other people are. Give yourself some time. I read this article yesterday about productivity and output and thought it was spot on:

  • Check your old stuff, books ,photographs, old drawings, etc. Sometimes you can be surprised what you can find. Do sort of a "spring- cleaning" and during that time, I'm sure you'll find something you've left behind. Get on Apple TV, or Mubi, find some wired and wonderfull movie, you would normalny skipped, try BNW, watch something about street art, or artists, that will inspire you, start writing, stlongeray up at night... It will come... Try new things... Music and movies are great start....
Enjoy. Make mistakes, try different things, experiment, use different medium, too many magazines? Cut stuff out... Make a weird collage, don't think..just go with the flow ... Sometimes..unplanned things can tell you an awful lot about yourself and your art...
