PHOTOGRAPHERS! If I were to run a weekly Q&A/Top Tips post, what topics would be useful? (e.g. estimates, insurance, legals, commissioners)

I'm a commercial shoot producer and run a photography production company. I have worked in ad-agencies commissioning creative briefs, and now support independent photographers to pitch for, win and deliver commercial creative briefs. Would love to my knowledge and pay it forward, but don't want to create more noise - what would really help you move your business forward?

  • Thank you @Emma Alexander. For me any form would work. Preferred channel would be a live Q&A session... (InstaLive, Zoom anything... )
  • I think a podcast is absolutely my first choice. I'm not a great reader.
  • I'd be happy with either a podcast (I'm friggin addicted to them anyways) or a blog post. :)
  • Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate your input - these are great questions and ones I would love to tackle!

One other question, how do you like to digest this kind of info: would you prefer to read this (i.e. a blog/Insta post); a short subtitled video; podcast or a one-off Insta-Live?

Thanks again and I'll be in touch once I've fleshed it out. Stay safe!

  • Love this idea and the reposnses have produced some brilliant questions!
I would be very interested in watching/reading this! Please count me in. THIS is definitely not noise. Absolutley 100% not. It is useful and beneficial and needed.

  • PS I honestly can't believe you've not had more people respond to your question :-|
Really appreciate you offering to share this kind of knowledge.
  • Hey Emma

I would definitely love to get more insight in the creative brief side of things, and what part the photographer has to play in that process when it comes to pitching. Thanks! :)
  • Hi Emma! Great initiative - I would also be interested in the process of chosing a photographer to work with and which channels you use to find new talent. (As I'm just starting my freelance business after working for a company the last 7 years, my focus is on customer acquisition right now).
Estimates is also a topic I would be interested in.

    Thanks a lot!
  • Hey Emma. This is a great idea, can see this being super useful! I can see a couple of people have already asked about your process when selecting a photographer to work with so I'll ask something different. From your point of view, is it beneficial for a photographer to be with an agency and if so, do you see this as a positive or negative when looking for a photographer? Ie. Would you favour a photographer whos completely independent over one that is with an agency? Or is this irrelevent and its solely down to their quality of work? Thanks! Scott.
  • Hi Emma, great idea. I also think from a photographer's perspective it would be interesting on which aspects you choose your photographers to work with, where do you find them (if you are willing to work with new/never worked with ones) and so on. Thanks so much :)
  • Lovely initiative Emma, thank you for doing this. From the commissioning perspective, I would be interested to know what is your selection process choosing the right photographer for the brief? Would you decide purely on previous experience basis or would you take a chance and work with somone you never worked with? Thank you Emma.
  • Love this idea... I’d love to know more on day rates and usage calculations for estimates
