Potluck, the magazine I run all about cooking, eating and sharing food is looking for submissions for our 6th issue! And we pay!

We’re super excited to announce that we are again open for work for the next issue of Potluck, a magazine about cooking, eating and sharing food and we want your work to be included!

We're looking for writing (all kinds but in particular personal), illustrations, recipes, photography, poetry and comics that fit the theme of AUTHENTICITY.

Here's a bit more about the inspiration behind the theme:
What makes food authentic? Do recipes need to have been passed down through generations, untouched by changes to society and circumstance, to qualify? Do we need to have been taught how to cook by some elderly relative to be authentic cooks? Do our meals need to use ingredients grown in a particular location? And does authentic food equal better food?

We can talk about authenticity as a socially constructed idea, enforced by our own personal assumptions of what the food should be. But it can also be the distinction between what we think the food should be and what the food actually is- a reflection of what we actually eat at home. Authenticity can be a vehicle to respect tradition, and by extension, the many hands that have made the thing before us. A way to connect with those no longer here or people we never would know otherwise.

We want this issue to be an exploration into origin, appropriation and progress; where our recipes come from, who owns them and what they become as society changes around them. We want your personal stories of what authenticity means to you, your best authentic recipes, and your most inauthentic. We want to share as many sides of the argument as possible, and the stories that go along with it.

  • Hello! I’d love to do this - I’m a writer and a cook and really interested in talking about simplistic, quality ingredients and how they are what make a meal really stand out. I’ve requested to connect.
  • Ah superb! Taking a look now and I've requested to connect with you - I'm planning on launching a magazine and would be superb to connect, really interested in your payment model, a great idea.
  • Dear Rhia,

    This looks very interesting.

I am Mandela a writer and storyteller. My birth place is located on the banks of a river and the food is rich in that fecund region and almost everyone can declare themselves as gourmands. In the monsoons a particular fish swims against the current from sea into this river for spawining. And this fish when swims in the muddy waters, its flesh acquires a great flavour. The whole region will be in fervor during monsoon. Cooking and eating this fish is a feast and not only that food defines the culture of this region.

I want to write a story around this and also want to introduce the foods of this region.

Please let me know how does this sound.

    Cheers
    Mandela
  • @Ojo Taiye Hey Ojo, we do take pitches for poetry but we'd need to see previous examples of your work to get a feel for how the piece would turn out! If you've got an idea you'd like to share, you can do it through the form linked above in the same way as writing pitches!
  • @Katherine Luna Gate @Areti Micha @Ojo Taiye just to answer all your questions about rates of pay at once- we pay using a royalties system where 40% of the sales are divided equally between all contributors to the issue. You can find a detailed explanation of how it works and projected numbers you can expect on this google doc! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v8AMnbLHIN3c4fZt1giChL_OAkwPhmqAKVgyJo_cqco/edit?usp=sharing
  • Hi Rhia, I'd be interested in contributing to Potluck, as it sounds like my field of expertise: I was raised in Sardinia, Italy, with a varied and expanded nutrition education, athough I'm now vegan! I have reviewed for vegans, vegetarians and those with intolerances/allergies on TripAdvisor (as Katherine Gate) and own their Restaurant Expert Badge! In 2016 I started blogging about vegan restaurants in London but I didn't renew my domain and the blog has been scrapped from the net.

Is there a deadline to meet for Authenticity, and what are Your pay rates?

    Many thanks. Luna :)
