Wanting to learn 3D typography – where should I start?

I recently got some helpful feedback from an interview that encouraged me to explore typography beyond 2D, especially with all the exciting 3D and AI-generated type that's trending right now.

I’d love to start learning how to bring more depth and experimentation into my work. If you’re a designer who works with 3D typography, what tools or platforms do you recommend? Any tips, tutorials, or inspiration you'd suggest for someone starting out?

yes completely agree about the 3D looking gimmicky, easily done. I have a degree in graphic design but want to explore new techniques

Before adding depth, make sure you understand type anatomy, kerning, hierarchy, and contrast in 2D. A solid foundation will make your 3D work look intentional rather than gimmicky.

If you're looking to explore 3D typography, a good place to start is Blender — it’s a free, open-source 3D program used by a lot of designers for type experiments. There’s a learning curve, but plenty of beginner-friendly tutorials out there.

For AI-generated type, you could try Adobe Firefly or Adobe Express, which let you play around with stylised text effects using prompts:
