Would you rather go for a job career or work for yourself?

  • Hello Charmine,

I prefer an in between. I like to work under my own steam but a be a party of a collective. For example, designing jewellery but having a workshop in a place where I am surrounded by other creatives and like minded people, where we inspire and help each other. This style is my ideal set up.
  • Hi @Charmine Sesay As others suggest, learn from others first. Never mind craft, or getting others to inspire and challenge you in ways you wouldn't conceive of yourself, it's the business side of things you'll learn to navigate – from how to cost a job, work with other talents, project manage, client manage, grow business, present effectively, get the outcomes you want, build a team and motivate them, how to solve mistakes and deal with the occasional failure, etc, etc, etc.

So when you do go independent – and you never know, you might discover you prefer working as a team – you'll be the deeply experienced resource your clients will really value and you can command fees appropriate to the experience you're then bringing to the table.

Other than that, I'll just say one thing that I truly believe, borne out by my personal experiences as a sole-practicioner and team player – one person can have a good idea, but it takes many to make that a great idea.

    Hope that helps.
  • I work for myself now but I'm grateful to have experienced jobs in different companies, with various grades of success, because they gave me the tools I need now. I knew the career ladder wasn't for me: I have been "Head of" but I don't like to manage people, just work with them :). And I like to be a hands-on designer too.
  • 100% work for myself. I've been doing it for 14years now and could never go back to the other side. BUT.... i agree wholeheartedly with the previous comments of work in studio or in a business before hand. Gain experience, learn from others, make your mistakes on someone elses dime. Not only will learn things that will help you navigate a freelance life but more importantly forge a network whic his invaluable when you are out on your own.

Having the dream of working for yourself is amazing and don't lose it, just make the most of what is around you to facilitate that dream.
  • It’s a hard one because on one hand I really love the social aspect of working in a team and being able to rely on a higher management for support. However, I love making decisions myself and not having to check in with someone else and working on my own time.
  • Personally, I don't have a choice. I'm disabled, I can't work in a salaried, full-time role. So I have to freelance.

Giving advice to others, especially people early in their career, I always advocate for getting studio experience if you can. It's more secure and there's a lot you can learn on the job that you don't in education, especially on a technical level.
