A Field Guide to Internet Behaviour is a series of animated gifs that aims to start a dialogue surrounding social media. While most people use some form of social media, the discourse surrounding the medium is often extremely negative and distorted – I wanted to start an honest conversation about the way we use it. Through observing and interviewing social media users, I created a something that reflects the multitude of ways people interact with technology and the internet. The field guide allows people to identify their own social media usage, engaging them on a familiar level and encouraging more self-aware discussion. In the future, I plan to take this project further, identifying more character types, categories and sub-types and developing the characters as Facebook stickers – making the conversation part of social media itself.
