Introduction

In the realm of organic chemistry, various compounds contribute to the vast diversity of chemicals known to humankind. One such compound that finds significant application in the industrial world is Iso butyl benzene (IBB).

What is isobutylbenzene?

Isobutyl Benzene also known as IBB or 2-methyl-1-phenylpropene is an organic, aromatic, neutral and colourless chemical compound with the molecular formula C10H14.

Properties

Isobutyl Benzene is a colourless liquid with the CAS number 538-93-2. It has a density of 0.852g/cm3, melting point of –51 degrees Celsius.

Manufacturing process.

This chemical compound is obtained through the reaction of toluene with propylene in the presence of sodium or potassium alloy. The reaction is carried out batch-wise with a mixture of fresh and recycled catalyst phases (decanted from previous runs).
Applications
  • It is mainly used to manufacture Ibuprofen, an analgesic and anti-inflammatory over the counter painkiller. The acylation of isobutyl benzene and hydrogen fluoride is used to synthesize ibuprofen.
  • 4-isobutylacetophenone, an intermediate for producing ibuprofen is obtained through its acylation.
  • It is used to study increased pigmentation and floral scent levels in Pap1-transgenic petunia.
  • It is used as a specialty solvent.
  • It is also less commonly used as a solid acid catalyst in the acylation of aromatic substances.
  • It is used to synthesize chemical intermediates such as Ortho-butyl Aniline and Para-Butyl Aniline.
  • It is used as a raw material for perfumes since it has a fruity, cherry sweet odour with a balsamic nuance which makes it perfect for perfumes.

Conclusion
ISO Butyl Benzene, with its distinct properties and versatility, plays a crucial role in various industrial sectors. From its applications in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries to its uses as a solvent and flavoring agent, IBB's significance cannot be understated. While ensuring safety and environmental consciousness, the chemical industry continues to explore its potential further.
