An Ode to Cloth

  • Sophie Wilkie

An Ode to Cloth’ focuses on recognising and celebrating the significance of cloth and the techniques used to create cloth such as weaving. Cloth used to be regarded as one of the most sacred possessions, providing protection and security for the wearer, yet the disposable society we live in makes us unaware of the privilege we have and ignorant to our actions on the planet. Inspired by historical tapestry, due to the durability and beauty of them, the denim is stripped back to appreciate the craftsmanship of the material. Because of aging, tapestries become even more valuable and precious. By turning the denim into a wearable tapestry, it ultimately asks the audience to slow down, cherish the art of crafting and embrace the cycle of mending.
