Artist Interview with Kitra

  • Fay Troote

The grey that dominated the scenery of his hometown Targoviste in Romania, fueled Kitra’s desire to color the world. Working as a multi-disciplinary artist, his joyful compositions have been transposed into murals, installations, design objects and digital activations all over Europe, through collaborations with clients such as Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Deutsche Bahn and Greenpeace.

1. What has been your favourite recent project?
My favourite recent project was a group exhibition at Museum of Recent Art. It was a prospective of a new abstract movement in Romania.

2. If you hadn't been in the creative industries ...
Good question, I've been asking myself this lately. I don't know if graphic design is in the same industry, but I think I would have gone in that direction or perhaps even into the world of mid century furniture restoration.

3. If you could relocate your studio for a year, where in the world would you go?
I would go somewhere where I can see the sea every day, perhaps to an island in Greece. I visited Greece for the first time last year and fell in love with the scenery.

4. How would you describe your practice?
My practice I can say is very mathematical, lately I use a lot of measurements in my compositions. Sometimes I feel like an architect.
5. What's your dream project or client?
I do not think I have a project or a client that I dream of working with. Every project I have had, I have enjoyed.

6. Where do you go for visual inspiration?
I am inspired by brutalist architecture, graffiti aesthetics and graphic design. Artist wise, I am inspired by Sol Lewitt, Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, Peter Halley and many more.
