Black Portraits Project

  • Abbi Bayliss

My work centres on my experience as a woman of colour in Britain. My digital portrait illustrations consistently feature women of colour that I am uplifted by either in my immediate community, such as family and friends, or the greater global one, such as positive role models. To me, representation is a really important theme in my work, as I enjoy creating art that reflects the faces that aren’t featured enough in the arts. I'm inspired by women in all creative fields from poetry, theatre, literature, music and visual arts which I translate by illustrating them. This exhibition is currently touring the South West of the UK at Bristol's The Station gallery and Exeter Phoenix. I've curated and hung this exhibition myself, which allowed me to make the space as creative as i aspired it to be, including a mural of my inspirations. The exhibition is a very personal project to me, as it explores my life through art, literature, film and music.
