Challenging Taboo

Focusing on breaking taboo subjects through paradigm of craft, by pulling back the curtain on taboo subjects like menstruation. Even though there has been a positive change in the conversations surround menstrual health there is still further to go. This is because having a uterus is challenging especially if you have a condition like Adenomyosis, Endometriosis, Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PMS. All of which are under-researched and affecting up to 90% of those living with a uterus. I am personally communicating the experience of living with a chronic pain illness; Adenomyosis. By examining the brutality of the medical industry when it comes to gynaecological health. Using material to embody narrative through biographical making, enveloping the deep connection to material and the body by embedding the sensory moments of living with poor menstrual health. Contrasting soft fabrics to hard cold ceramic to guide each moment of a medical examination in hospital. Steeped in pain, loss of dignity, and lack of solutions. Underpinned by historical oppression to cause the reaction to make meaningful change to the conversations surrounding menstrual health. This autoethnographical craft explores the concept that craft materials can be given more agency when autobiographical experience is embedded through the material.
