Clubber Spotlight: Jess Yung
This week, we caught up with makeup artist Jess Yung for our Club Spotlight. The Hong Kong-born artists sheds light on her process, her affinity for makeup as an art medium, Japanese anime, and how her recent move to London has created a new wave of inspiration for her
"My name is Jess Yung and I'm a makeup artist who was born and raised in Hong Kong and recently moved to London. In Hong Kong, I mainly worked on makeup for local magazines and pop singers. I also started photography as a hobby during the pandemic in 2020 because it was difficult to work with a team while staying at home. I'm really happy that I learned this skill because it helped me capture the exact angles I want to highlight in my work.
From a young age, I've been inspired by Japanese animation, fashion, and music. I draw a lot of inspiration from anime such as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Nana, and Tokyo Ghoul, which have a dark vibe and bold visuals. I love incorporating the creative flair of my favourite anime characters into my makeup gigs to make them more engaging and fun. I've always been fascinated by people’s potential; I see makeup as a fashion designer’s canvas, allowing for creative expression on different faces.
To me, fashion and makeup go hand in hand, as both involve building ideas and imagination on every face. In my previous work environment, I couldn't express my creativity as the focus was on maintaining a commercial culture, which made me lose my enthusiasm for creating from the heart. However, during my two months in the UK, I've been captivated by the diverse cultures and the wealth of creative talent. The people I've met here are exceptionally creative and open-minded when it comes to embracing various forms of artistic expression without prejudice. This environment has truly inspired me, and I believe that collaborating with such creative individuals will lead to even more innovation and surprising creative projects in the future."
