Concept Art for The Name of the Wind

  • Rachel Brown - Duthie

This project was based on creating concept art for the first book of the Kingkiller Chronicles; The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

‘Iron,’ he said. His voice sounding with strange resonance, as if it were an order to be obeyed. Bast doubled over as if punched in the stomach, baring his teeth and making a noise halfway between a growl and a scream. Moving with an unnatural, sinuous speed, he drew one hand back to the side of his head and tensed himself to spring. It all happened in the time it takes to draw a sharp breath. Still, somehow, Kvothe’s long fingered hand caught Bast’s wrist. Unaware or uncaring, Bast leaped toward Chronicler only to be brought up short, as if Kvothe’s hand were a shackle. Bast struggled furiously to free himself, but Kvothe stood behind the bar, arm out stretched, motionless as steel or stone. -pg 92 The Name of the Wind

I chose to create this scene because it shows off the subtle nature of the magic in this world and how things are often not what they seem. I also like how it shows that despite Kvothe having lost his magic powers, he is still a dangerous figure. It depicts all of these characters dangerous edge bringing out some interesting expressions and postures, and having the sword named Folly watching over this foolish moment left me inspired which is why I chose this moment over all others.
These are items that were important or had a great impact on Kvothe's life such as his father's lute which he learnt to play music on, the book of Retoric and Logic that got him to university and the mask of Encais worn by the man who saved his life.
The Waystone Inn home to Kvothe later in life and where he tells the story of his life to the Chronicler.
