Ebbs and Flows of the Maternal relationship

  • Michelle Ameh

This is a final piece of a project series of which focused on the symbolic ties of maternal generational relationships. Using inspiration from keith haring and Basquiat in terms of iconography as well, as cultural and religious symbolism each element of the painting from the choice of flowers to the clothing on each person. It was important to me for each element to have significance whether the onlooker was aware of its context or not, my inspiration for this form of storytelling was the Pre-Raphaelites of which circulated their artwork around folklore tales and literature in their compositions. Themes behind this piece are that everyone place is chosen for a reason just as my place in generation lineage was not by my choice however my position has significance, just as much as the ones before me. In terms of my use of contrast of shadow and tone my inspiration for this style was specifically Caravaggio and Kehide Wiley.
