The first ever traffic signal was placed near the Houses of Parliament on 10th December 1868. Based on the semaphore arms and lights used in the railway signaling systems; it had semaphore arms for daytime and a red and green coloured gas lamp for night. Unfortunately a month later it exploded injuring the policeman operating it and was never used again.
