Gleasondale Mill

During the late18th and early 19th centuries the Mills were the center of the New England region’s economy. Towns like Lowell and Lawrence are two cities that sprung up around the Mill industry. Even in smaller towns that are now middle class commuter towns like Stow, the mills were not only one of the main sources of employment but also in many ways the center of the community. With the collapse of the mill Industry many of these cities and towns were left with large, empty buildings and an economic catastrophe that the larger cities are still struggling to overcome 100 years later. This project looks at one of these forgotten mills as a modern day ruin and aims to examine the intersection of memory and entropy through the Architecture and marks left behind by both time and the humans whose lives were spent working in the mill.
