Casino operations at Resort World Genting (pictured), Malaysia's only gaming resort, will resume on Friday (June 19) at 10 a.m., according to a notice posted on the property's website on Wednesday, but only for Genting Rewards members.
"Due to limited capacity, admission to Sky Casino on Sky Avenue and the Genting Club at the Genting Grand Hotel is for Genting Rewards members only. Public admission to casinos will resume as soon as possible," the announcement said on behalf of Genting Malaysia Bhd, the resort's promoter.
"Resorts will reopen with selected attractions, hotels and restaurants," the company said in a separate statement.
Resorts World Genting first closed on March 18 as part of a national effort to contain the novel coronavirus linked to COVID-19 infections.
Many investment analysts have noted that the eventual recovery of the gaming business in the Macau market, where casinos remain open except for a 15-day pause in February, is likely driven by high-end play, as it includes fewer customers who may be safely away from each other to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
"Enhanced safety measures will be implemented to ensure the health and safety of all guests and employees," the resort's World Genting announced Wednesday.
The company said in a separate statement that it will monitor the casinos' number of guests and "not overcrowded." There will be a limit on the number of players allowed at the game table at any one time, and slot machines will also resume operations, but there will be reduced availability to ensure social distancing between players.
"We have increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfection of game equipment and machines," the company added. "All bills are sterilized and game chips are disinfected with advanced antibacterial coating technology."
Genting Malaysia said it will use an existing smartphone app for Genting Rewards members. Casino goers will have to scan a QR code using the app when entering the casino.
