How to See with New Eyes

  • Andy Hau

Our world has changed in just a matter of weeks, and I wanted to share with you an illustration that feels relevant to where we are now as we come to see the world with new eyes. Taken from our "Remake You and Me" series, this illustration was created based entirely on idioms. Many people have been talking about how in times of extreme hardship, people increasingly turn to creatives for comfort (music, film, art etc). It's a little dramatic and cloyingly sentimental but I think there is a truth in it. It reminds me of Miranda Priestley's "You think this has nothing to do with you" monologue from The Devil Wears Prada: day to day, there is a feeling that what we do as creatives is frivolous or pointless - and yet what we do is consumed every single day, from the jingles you hear on the radio to the Facebook ads you see on your timeline and if we've done our jobs correctly, our work has the power to affect your point of view, your mood, your mental health and your decisions. That's a lot of influencing power that the creative industry holds, and right now we must try to use that power for supportive and relevant creative, because who knows who we might end up helping.
