Ι ΑΜ: Interactive biofeedback art installation

  • Eleni Stavrakidou

Designed and created by Eleni Stavrakidou “I AM” is a biofeedback art installation which transforms a person’s beating heart into light formations, allowing a single person to light up an entire room and everyone in it. The installation was presented at the 12th Audiovisual Arts Festival, in Corfu, organized by the Ionian University. The artwork was influenced by research on self-awareness theories and atomic physics. The main concept deals with the idea of self-awareness and the way it can be perceived, when trying to conceive the person as part of an interconnected world. On the one hand visualizing the heartbeat is a very important tool, according to the objective self-awareness theory. The OSA theory explains how bringing attention to the self as an object can benefit the ways of understanding ourselves and living up to our potential. On the other hand, the artwork emphasizes the interconnectedness between us and the physical space, when our vital energy lights up the whole installation. Atomic Physics were taken into account because they explain how these interactions occur on the subatomic scale. The idea that our existence transforms the space around us was the triggering point.
